Lamar Church of Christ - Our History |
|
|
In the summer of 1951 Brother W.A. Record came to Lamar in search of church of Christ members. He located a handful of people which included the George Claypool family, the Floyd Buck family, Joanna Bishop, Dallie Miles, Mrs. Wilburn (Maxine) Cox. Brother purchased a house and lot at 14th and Cherry St. and began to hold service. Services were also held in Liberal and Sylvania. Later Brother Record sold the building and lot to the growing congregation. Other preachers filled in until Brother Owen Albright came to Lamar to take a full time job. He preached during the winter months and college students preached during the summer. The church was growing and in 1962, it was decided to build a more formal church building and use the house as a parsonage. All the members worked together to construct the building in their spare time, on weekends, and after work. Several years later, the current fellowship hall and more class rooms were added. |
